Is there a criteria to be called Italian? My fiance gets really upset when a person calls him?

white or caucasian. His father is full blooded Italian, he can trace his ancestors all the way back to Siciliy and is very proud of his heritage. His mother is what society would call white just like I am what society would all black. My question is, my fiance gets even more upset when a person with an Italian mother and NOT an Italian father calls themselves Italian. He says in this case the person is not Italian for the person’s father isn’t italian. I have a friend and his mother is Italian and his father isn’t so therefore his last name isn’t Italian. So here we go again, if your last name isn’t an Italian last name, don’t even think about calling yourself Italian in my fiance’s eyes. To him that is a dead give away to a fake italian, an imposter! Does anyone know the history or background of these myths? If my fiance is correct that’s fine, but if it’s just his big italian macho ego talking I need to put his ego in check. I really need some clarity on this. THANKS!
Mari 76 -thank you for your response. yes my boyfriend can speak Italian, knows his Italian history very well, art culture, origins, dialets etc…My boyfriend has blonde hair and blue eyes also. He would never say someone doesn’t look Italian. As far as the mother issue, I have heard that before also, if your mother is Italian for some reason a person is not acknowledged as Italian. Don’t know why but I have heard that.

Based on my family’s surnames, where do we most likely hail from?

This is so sad, but I’ve got no idea as to what my heritage is. Neither do my parents, and my grandparents are not around to answer.

Some surnnames on my father’s side of the family are Gilbreath, Mcspadden, and Crafton. I’ve Googled them, but I’ve not found anything that talks about their origins.

Any ideas?

Need some Greek surnames?

Creating a play and we’re going to do a Greek-themed one but we need some unusual, different Greek surnames. Not the typical last names like Pappas and Christopoulou …. they are nice but we want something unusual!

The meanings and origins would be nice too. =)
If it matters at all we have characters from Sparta, Crete, Athens, Mystras and Rhodes.

Does the origin come into play when naming your baby?

I have a question, and it’s obvious that I haven’t named anybody before. When you decide the name for your kid, does it have to be the origin of your last name? Obviously, some people have a Spanish first name but a Irish last name.

Just wondering if the origin of the name ever comes into play when deciding this, or if you can name the first name freely without worrying about origins. I guess this goes for middle names too.

Thanks!
